A healthy waistline measures

For every 1 cm above the ideal the relative risk to health increases by 2%. Diseases commonly linked to obesity are cardiovascular disease, diabetes & cancer. (Eur J.  Clin Nutr 2007)

In order to lose 0.5-1kg per week you will need to reduce your Kilojoule (KJ) intake by 2000-4000KJ/day

AND

Increase your level of activity

Tips for weight loss!

1. Keep a diet diary

You actually don't have to count calories!

Keeping a diet diary will help to highlight your 'problem foods'

When shopping read labels for kilojoule content

This will help increase your awareness of the 'hidden calories' in foods (e.g. low fat foods are often high in sugar)-make a note of these in your diary

Should you decide to count calories

Calorie counters can be purchased from most Newsagencies OR are freely available online

Most women will lose weight comfortably on a

Daily energy Intake of 5500-6000KJ/day

Most men will lose weight comfortably on a

Daily intake of 7000-8000KJ/day

2. Exercise

Ideally exercise for 30-40mins each day; even walking is enough to make a difference

Aerobic exercise (walking, jogging, cycling, swimming) when combined with resistance training (weights, pushups, situps, squats) will optimise the benefits from exercise.
